How to get a job in comedy from the couch
It may sound counterintuitive to hire a comedian, but if you’re looking to hire someone for a TV show, or a TV podcast, it might make sense to get in touch with the comedian’s agent.
Comedy podcasts and shows are growing, but they’re still relatively niche.
“Most people don’t know what a podcast is,” says Dave Weckman, creator of The Big Bang Theory and a veteran TV producer.
You can usually find one for under $100,000 on iTunes, and if you have a decent network, you can get it for a fraction of that.
For a podcast, though, it’s more complicated.
“The podcast model is really hard to understand,” Weckfield says.
“There’s a lot of nuance to it.
You have to be able to talk about your podcast in a lot more depth, to get your voice out there, and then you have to figure out the business model for that.
It’s really hard, and it’s a little bit frustrating, but it’s part of what we do.”
Weckstein’s advice: Find a podcast that is interesting to you, but isn’t as well known as a TV series or a podcast.
You need to get an idea of the show from the title alone, he says.
The more you know, the more you can make a show.
But if you do find a podcast where you have the potential to make a lot, Weckmann says, that’s when you can start looking at the other aspects of the deal.
For example, if you need a comedy writer, a writer might need a comedian.
For the podcast, “the show is about a podcast,” Weckerman says.
He says you’ll want to negotiate the podcast’s costs, but he says you might be able get a better deal for a writer and for a podcast producer if they’re more involved in producing the show.
Weckie says it depends on the show, but there are other things to consider.
“It depends on what the show is,” he says, “and what you can do to improve the show.”
If you have more experience working in the TV business, he suggests a show like The Biggest Loser might be good.
But even with that, “you might be better off looking for something that’s going to be more about you,” he adds.
You could find a niche show on an indie network, for example.
“I would have to say, you’re better off doing something that isn’t going to get big,” Wecks says.
But you might also want to consider a podcast with a larger audience.
“If you have an audience that’s a bit smaller than you, you might find a show that you like,” he advises.
And if you want to get into a comedy show, Wecks recommends a comedy podcast, where the hosts are less famous.
“You might find it a little harder,” he notes.
The show might also require a different approach to the business side.
“For a podcast show, you may want to think about, how do you get more viewers for your show?” he says — how to make the show feel more like a regular podcast?
The podcast is a way to reach that audience.
So if you don’t have that, you’ll probably be more likely to be a better fit for a comedy-focused show.
“Maybe you could get a more mainstream show that’s kind of like a podcast or a web show,” Weickstein says.
That would help.
But the key is finding something that you enjoy and that you can tell your listeners about.
“How do you make it fun and interesting for your listeners?” he asks.
“Do you need to tell them what the title is?
Do you need the full show to be there?”
For podcasting, you need that, too.
“What I recommend is finding a podcast podcast that you are more interested in,” Weitz says.
And for comedy, you want something that feels like a good fit for your personality.
“This is not about how to get more views or make more money,” he concludes.
“That’s just not what this is about.”
